The name Layer 8 is a reference to the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) abstract model of computer networking, in which there are 7 layers:
Layer 1: Physical
Layer 2: Data Link
Layer 3: Network
Layer 4: Transport
Layer 5: Session
Layer 6: Presentation
Layer 7: Application
The 7th layer (the top layer) describes methods and protocol of software applications, which brings us to the 8th Layer- the individual person, otherwise known as the "user". As it fits our above list:
Layer 8: The Individual
While it is not OFFICIALLY a part of the OSI model, it is known in many circles, and often used as jargon when referring to the consumer base. It is important in understanding and implementing the OSI model, because the technology will be used by the consumer, and therefore must be shaped for the consumer.
Our decision to establish our company as Layer 8, or "The 8th Layer", is based on the human interaction with products and services that drives the effectiveness of any model. The 8th layer is the collaborative layer, in which people make the difference in an outcome.
